Loading...This article analyzes the ways in which current integration processes within the European Union influence the formation ofidentities in Germany, Great Britain and Trance. Following a histórica! discussion of identity formation processes in each country, the author argües that European integration exercises distinct types of influences upon collective identities in the three nations, in the sense that "Europeaness" is absorbed and interiorized in different ways. Although the article condudes that supranational and national identities can coexist, given that strong linkages are apparent between the two, competition between distinct levéis of identity also constitutes a challenge to thefurther deepening of regional integration.

Loading...This article examines the ways in which current processes of globalization undermine the sovereignty of the nation-state. Within this context, four types of sovereignty are analyzed (interdependence, internal, Westphalian and legal-international). It is concluded that new processes and actors generated by globalization have yet to affect all types of sovereignty in a determínate fashion, while they have alsofaüed to créate new structures capable ofreplacing the state. According to the author, both sovereignty and the nation-state have confronted more serious threats throughout history than those being faced at present, with which the article concludes that prognoses concerning the death of the nation-state in the current international system may well be mistaken.

Loading...This article offers a series of considerations concerning Cubas role in the post-Cold War regional and global contexts. The author analyzes the country 's diverse efforts to strengthen its foreign policy tozvards other Latín American nations, with the goal of delinking its relations with the región from the influence of the United States. Special emphasis is placed upon the relationship that Fidel Castro has built with Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez, as an alternative means of expanding Cuba 's margins of action ow an external level. Notwithstanding such efforts, the article concludes that the country 's possibilities for enhanríng its foreign relations continúes to be hampered by U.S. policy.

Loading...This article examines the principal characteristics of Colombian foreign policy during the administration of Andrés Pastrana. A series of general tendencies in the country 's international relations are highlighted with the goal of situating the postures adopted during the period under study. The author's analysis focuses on the implications of Colombia 's domestic crisis for its foreign policy strategies towards distinct regions of the world. lt is concluded that the emphasis placed upon the country's bilateral relations with the United States has impeded the strengthening of ties with other countries, as well as the creation ofmore positive approaches to the múltiple problems that Colombia faces at present.
