Is there a possibility to generalise such principles towards a ‘theoryof practice’, which will be able to provide better management strategies for spatialdevelopment?

It investigates the philosophical, methodologicaland technical contribution that Applied Geography can make to a more holistic perspectiveon language in context. An agenda for international collaborative researchin an enlarged Europe is proposed.

The threat of destructive natural events and significantdegree of vulnerability are constituent parts of every cultural landscape, and canbe recognized as immediate effects of natural processes, as practical countermeasuresto prevent damages, as keeping off the most hazardous areas and, also,as unsuitable acts or wrong interventions into the geographical space. These elementsare presented as important topics of geographical research in the nearfuture, together with the study of subjective, personal, perception of vulnerabilitydue to natural hazards, which is one of the key starting-points for future dealingwith areas, where the potentially damaging or dangerous natural processes are inaction.

On the basis of previous findings and with the help of data fromSlovenia’s Geographical Information System, we undertook to determine potentialavalanche surfaces in the Slovene Alps. In so doing, we considered the results ofdata processing on avalanches in the Julian Alps from the avalanche cadastre, other similar studies, and data layers on natural and geographical elements inhigh-mountain regions. In conclusion, we compared simulated and actual potentialavalanche threat areas to assess the validity of our model.

Over fifty years, the glacierthinned in some places by more than thirty-five meters, and its volume decreasedto one fiftieth of its size in 1952.

As it contains relatively little water, lessthan some large lakes, it is extremely sensitive to ecological changes. The geomorphologicalfacts warn us that the possibilities for its exploitation are very limited. In future, a very careful, thoughtful, and balanced approach to dealing with its naturalresources will be essential. Given the current lack of any long-term developmentalvision, it appears that we are not sufficiently conscious of this fact.

These cultures growat their northern climatic borders, therefore they are periodically affected by severefrosts. The development of olive growing, and other climatically more sensitive culturesas well, has also been fostered by both the climatic trends of the last decadesand the forecasts for the 21st century prognosticating further warming of the climate.

On the basis of the linear trend of changes in the proportions of areasuntil 2012, we showed anticipated changes in proportions of areas according to basicland categories. The proportion of orchard should decrease the least, while theproportion of built-up area should increase the most.

We draw ourconclusions on the basis of the presence of rural geography as a course in studyprogrammes in Slovenian and some foreign Universities, the amount of bibliographicalunits from the field of rural geography in the central geographical libraryof Slovenia and our experiences with the project of integrated rural developmentand the village renovation in Slovenia.

The criteria of land suitability for arable surfaces, vineyards, orchards, meadows and built-up areas are selected geoecological factors. Thestress is on Geographical Information System and on quantitative methods. Theestablishing the degree of significance of geo-factors in cases of different types ofland use is of special importance.

After introduction of aborder line between Slovenia and Croatia the process of transformation of ruralareas have taken on additional issues connected to the problems of border areasand marginal regions and thus are both specific and new for this region. Transformationof rural areas is a permanent process, that affects both the landscape, aswell as its functions.

Further improvement of geography teaching and assurance of highquality syllabus on every level of geographical education require a defining of moredemanding geographical contents and reasons for their difficulty, argumentation oftheir incorporation into syllabuses and assessment of ways and methods for dealingwith them and for their adoption. The analyses of scientifically demanding geographicalcontents offer the origins for better organisation of contents in the verticalof geographical education and the origins for better education of future geographyteachers.

The development of Slovene thematiccartography accelerated considerably following the independence of thecountry in 1991. From the viewpoint of content and technology, its greatestachievements are the Geographical Atlas of Slovenia and the National Atlasof Slovenia, which are outstanding achievements at the international leveland of great significance for the promotion of Slovenia and Slovenegeography and cartography. However, this rapid development has beenaccompanied by numerous problems, for example, the ignoring of variousSlovene and international conventions for the preparation of maps includingUnited Nations resolutions, Slovene and international (SIST ISO), andcopyright laws.

The main aims of our study were following: to estimate thepollution severity and environmental conditions and to compare the answersbetween both. The inhabitants of the Šalek Valley are very critical towardtheir environment and they are basically satisfied with it (62,4 %). In theZasavje Region the inhabitants are less satisfied (39,5 %) with theirenvironment, because the pollution of their region is larger than averagein Slovenia.

Changes brought about by human interventions into theenvironment, resulting from diverse human activities, are also taken intoconsideration. Expert evaluation of all of the indicators has been made forthe optimally homogeneous landscape units, thus providing a good basisforthe planning of sustainable development.

In the article, the analysis of the selected indicators of theachieved degree of the total and integral pollution is presented. In theframework of the environmental vulnerability studies on the spatial levelof landscape-ecological types for this purpose the following indicatorswere selected: population density, density of working places, trafficintensity and percentage of forests.

Evaluation ofenvironmental vulnerability from the view of particular landscape-formingcomponent can be adjusted to different spatial levels: smallerlandscape-ecological units or larger, but still rather homogeneouslandscape-ecological types. With sufficient data it is possible quiteprecisely to evaluate environmental vulnerability on the level of landscapeunits. On the level of landscape-ecological types the generalisation ismuch more significant. Despite this the environmental vulnerability studiesgive usoverview over the state of the environment and the impact of humanpressures.
