If a town isregarded as an ecosystem in which all its components are interconnected and interdependent,it is easier to define its carrying capacity; and to understand its metabolism means that thecauses and results of negative impacts of human activities can further be explained. Whena town is understood as an open ecosystem, its functioning, role and impacts on differentlevels can also be identified. Presented are also the conditions and challenges which will haveto be faced by the towns on their way to sustainability.

Demonstrated is the dependence of surface temperature onsurface characteristics, such as land use, morphological features and the time of the day. Theresults can be useful for establishing topoclimatic units with similar temperature regimes.

This sensitive region is confronted withproblems of space management, water supply, waste management, transportation and energy, especially during the tourist season because of the pressure on infrastructure in the coastalregion where there is a great concentration of population and tourist capacities. Anotherenvironmental problem is the oil transportation by a pipeline which is planned to be built inthe frames of Russian-Croatian project Družba-Adria.
