Abstract

Geographical monographs of Slovenia by A. Melik, and university and secondary school textbooksby S. Ilešič, enabled the Slovene regional geography to pursue international developmentsin this field. Tempestuous debates about the methodology and meaning of Slovene regionalgeography were followed by an increased interest for this matter in science, education and inpractice.

Abstract

This treatise describes the development of social geography during ninety years of itsexistence at the University of Ljubljana. This development can be divided into three periods:(1) period of traditional geography; (2) period of fast industrialization in Slovenia and with itthe connected processes of urbanization and deagrarization, manifested in dynamic changesin image and function of the Slovene landscape; and (3) period after independence of Sloveniacharacterized by attempts to introduce sustainable development.

Abstract

The paper is an attempt to present the development of physical geography at the Departmentof Geography at the Ljubljana’s Faculty of Arts. The last two decades, from 1989 to 2009,are discussed, trying to include all its branches, forming the Chair of physical geographyduring this period. The presentation of physical geographers, who worked as researchersand teachers in particular branches of physical geography, should demonstrate the way anddegree of studying physical-geographical characteristics of, mainly, Slovenian landscapes.

Abstract

Abstract

The paper deals with contemporary political map of the Balkans, founded on morphological,structural and functional analysis. Characteristically, there are frequent changes of politicalborders in common. The most of nation-states are relatively young, small-sized, ethnicheterogeneous. The space is characteristic by large peripheral areas, but the core areas aresmall. The most of nations have two spatial-political units. All these nation-states are weakand vulnerable, and that is why they represent a high latent crisis potential. On the otherhand, the transport, transit and strategic role of this area is increasing, indeed.

Abstract

The article presents the ninety years of activity of the library at the Department of Geographywhose holdings rank it as the second biggest library at the Faculty of Arts as well as the mainhigh-school geographical library. Described are its formation, the changes of its location, itsemployees, the development of the library holdings, and the catalogues. The cartographicmaterial stored in the map room figures an important part of the library holdings. Variousservices are offered to library’s users – borrowing of the library material, training of users,making of bibliographies, access to the information sources, and the publishing of Biltennovosti. The plans for the future are presented in the closing part.
