Abstract

The present paper records for the first time the presence of the crustacean copepod Lamproglena compacta in the branchial microhabitat of the cyprinid species Leuciscus cephalus that elongs to a lotic Romanian ecosystem. Also, we discuss the affinity for fixing site on gill filaments, the observations being sustained by the t Student statistic test.

Abstract

The investigations aimed to establish the qualitative composition of summer algal communities of the ponds which are the strategic drinking water reserves for the city of Cluj-Napoca. They are located on the right bank of the Someşu Mic River, between the Floreşti village and the city Cluj-Napoca. There have been identified 201 algal taxa, 152 of them in the plankton and 143 in the benthos, with 105 taxa occurring in both plankton and benthos samples. The algal flora is characterized by a large number of ubiquitous, cosmopolitan elements, together with several algae having well defined ecological preferences (basiphilous), or indicators of the trophic status and saprobic level of the water. The estimation of water trophicity level was performed based on phytoplankton indices. The floristic affinity of the investigated communities was tested by Jaccard?s similarity index. Together with autochthonous algae there have been found some alien ones, washed into the ponds from the Someşu Mic River drainage basin.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and cardiovascular diseases

Abstract

The article presents some general facts about omega-3 fatty acids and their role in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for the human body. Their beneficial effects in the prevention of cardiovascular disease have been known for decades. Since then, several epidemiological and interventional trials showed the value of omega-3 acids in the treatment of certain diseases. Most of them revealed the protective role of omega-3 fatty acids on heart and cardiac functions. However, some of these studies couldn?t demonstrate a positive association between fish oils and preventing cardiac events. The major cardiologic societies from European Union and United States of America recommend omega-3 fatty acids as supplements for primary and secondary prophylaxis of cardiovascular diseases.

The importance of monitoring the quality parameters of surface water and ground water in order to treat them for obtaining potable water

Abstract

In the sustainable management of natural and artificial resources, the management of drinking water has a very important and direct impact on the population`s health. The analysis of the organoleptic characteristics, physical, chemical and bacteriological analysis in relation to the quality conditions as recorded in the specific rules is a way to prevent biological disasters that may produce the water in the field of infectious and non-infectious pathology. In his paper we present issues related to the monitoring of the main physical-chemical and bacteriological parameters of raw water used as source in water treatment plant from Bistrţa City as well as undeline the need to improve methods for cleaning water destinated to human consumption, food industry and aquaculture.

Microbial biotechnology for remediation of aquatic habitats polluted with chromium

Abstract

Chromium may occur in nine different forms of oxidation ranging from ?II to +VI, with forms II, III and VI as the most commonly encountered. In Cluj county, chromium pollution dates well back in time and has caused important dysfunction to the mechanical-biological wastewater purification station of the city of Cluj (Coşier & Diţă 1996). The purpose of this study was to develop one microbial method able to reduce hexavalent chromium (mobile, permeable to cell membrane, carcinogenic and mutagenic) (Ishikawa et al 1994) to the trivalent form (insoluble and an essential element for humans) (Song et al 2006). Different sources of chromium-reducing bacteria and many sources of carbon and energy added to the Kvasnikov mineral basal medium (Komori et al 1990) with increasing amount of chromate (200- 1000 mg/l) were tested. Two bacterial strains, able to reduce even 1000 mg chromate/l, were isolated in pure culture. For one of these bacterial strains, we determined the optimum conditions for the reduction of Cr (VI).

Heavy metals concentration in tissues of the Eurasian minnow Phoxinus phoxinus from the Czarna Orawa River system, Poland

Abstract

Concentration of the four heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd) in tissues of the Eurasian minnow Phoxinus phoxinus from Polish part of the Czarna Orawa River system was investigated using the AAS method. Significant differences among sampling sites were recorded, and visible trend was observed, i.e. concentrations of these metals arose from the upper most to the lower most site. Anthropogenic pollution of the river is inferred from these data. Urgent water treatment and prevention are needed to protect environment of this submontane river.

Non-native freshwater fishes in Poland:an overview

Abstract

The number of non-native fish species in Poland has already passed 30, and has being still growing consecutively from the end of 19th century. It is rather difficult to assess impact of all these introductions on native fauna, however it seems reasonable to say that most of them have rather negatively affected indigenous biocenoses. Due to increase of number of new alien fishes found in Polishinland waters observed in the last years, some regulations regarding limitations of introductions should be applied.

Endangered fish species of the world - a review

Abstract

The present paper summarizes a large part of the endangered and critically endangered fish species of the world. The list was constructed using the comprehensive IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (available in December 2008) and the well elaborated FISHBASE (available on the official website, in 2008) for taxonomy and accepted scientific names of the species. To these two important sources, many scientific papers and communications were added when recent and useful reports were found. However, there is a long way from the fish species list of this review to the world?s complete list of endangered and critically endangered fish species. In our list were not included subspecies, populations, varieties, or species having a debatable taxonomic status. The scope of this review was not to inventorize all the fishes included in these two categories, but to make possible drawing some general conclusions regarding most important possible causes of fish species extinction and to make suggestions concerning fish species conservation possibilities through aquaculture.
