Exploring the Potent Antibacterial Properties of Carica Papaya Red Lady Leaves Extracts
Abstract
Objective: This study aims to investigate the antibacterial potential of Acetone and n-Hexane Extracts from Red Lady Variety Carica Papaya Leaves. Methods: The Red Lady leaves extraction method was piloted at the University of Karachi. Initially, five kilograms of fresh green were collected, cleaned, washed thoroughly with tap and distilled water before being air-dried, chopped, and blended. Acetone/n-hexane were used as solvents in a Soxhlet extractor. The study aimed to explore the antibacterial activities of these extracts using the 96 well Microplate Alamar Blue Assay. Five bacterial isolates, including gram positive strains such as Staphylococcus aureus (NTCC6571) and Bacillus subtilis (ATCC23857), and gram negative strains like Escherichia coli (ATCC25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC10145), and Salmonella typhi (ATCC14028), were sourced from the research laboratory of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Hussain Ebrahim Jamal Research Institute of Chemistry and Dr Panjwani for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, University of Karachi, Pakistan. Results: The results disclose that the n-hexane extracts achieved from CPL. var. RL exhibited no substantial growth inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, and Salmonella Typhi. On the other hand, the acetone extracts of CPL. var. RL showed slight inhibition against Bacillus subtilis, with an inhibitory concentration of 60 mg per 3000 ?g/ml concentration, in comparison to the standard drug Ofloxacin. Conclusion: The n-hexane extracts demonstrated limited antibacterial activity across all tested strains acetone extracts of CPL. var. RL exhibited marginal inhibition specifically against Bacillus subtilis, although at a higher concentration compared to the standard drug. Additional investigation is necessary to explore the possible therapeutic usages of Carica Papaya Red Lady leaves extracts.
