Abstract
This article presents a review of research in the humanities and social sciences on the relationship between children and animals, highlighting four main themes that have shaped research since the 1970s: the welfare of children through animals, the defence of education in favour of the animal cause, the objectification of children’s attitudes towards animals through statistical surveys, and the areas of interaction between children and animals. In so doing, it invites us to pursue this subject of study by drawing on the theoretical tools of the sociology of socialization. There are key questions that need to be addressed if we want to understand how the relationship with animals is constructed in childhood. For example, we need to look more closely at children’s reception of discourse and media, the relationship in terms of dispositions between a variety of socialisation bodies, and the role played by peers in a childhood world saturated by the presence of animals.
