La forêt de Tijuca : de l’attrayante nature au paysage désolé
Abstract
This article deals with the place of landscape painting in the formation of Rio de Janeiro’s artistic culture in the first half of the nineteenth century. It traces the debates that took place in the Class of Fine Arts at the Institut de France regarding the promotion of landscapes in the awards system and the need to reformulate teaching methods according to the genre’s implementation in Brazil. The article also briefly discusses the role of Nicolas-Antoine Taunay in this process as well as the work of Félix-Émile Taunay at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts as a scholarly advisor and practitioner of landcape paintings through an examination of two of his pieces.
