Teacher profiles: prestige and hierarchy at the Rio de Janeiro Education Institute (1950s-60s)
Abstract
This article discusses the teacher profile with the Teacher Qualification Programme delivered by the ‘Rio de Janeiro Education Institute’ in the 1950s and 60s with an emphasis on investigating teacher qualification processes, access to the Teacher Qualification Programme, as well as the Programme’s hierarchy issues and teaching careers. In addition to some specific features shared with other staff of the ‘Institute’ and the appeal to their ‘teaching vocation’ as the major reason for embracing the teaching career, a hierarchy was also directly observed, related to: a) ‘the school subjects taught’; b) ‘the teaching district and level of authority the referred district was granted’; c) the ‘circulation of the teaching materials’ designed by these specific members of the school staff.
