The beauty and the beast of Cuban journalism. Obtrusive and unobtrusive topics in the formation of the public agenda
Abstract
The existing gap between the evaluation of obtrusive and unobtrusive topics in the media agendas is perceived by the public agenda in Cuba as the “phenomenon of beauty and the beast”. The work makes a comparison of the contingent conditions that influence the establishment of the public agenda on obtrusive and unobtrusive subjects, taking into account previous quantitative results that make possible a more complete analysis of the phenomenon. A qualitative design was applied and methods such as Analysis-synthesis and Inductive-deductive were used. The relationship between media and public agendas on obtrusive and unobtrusive topics has points of contact in terms of the temporal stability of objects, the high degree of need for orientation and interest in information and personal identification according to the degree of impact material or geographical, cultural, social, affective closeness. Among the differences, there are low correlations between media and public agendas on obtrusive subjects and moderate correlations regarding unobtrusive ones.
