Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Malaysian waters cover approximately 5.35 % of both Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, primarily through marine parks and no-fishing zones. These areas play a crucial role in conserving marine resources by ensuring sustainable habitats. Aiming for a national target of 10 % MPAs by 2030 aligns with Malaysia's commitments to international obligations at the United Nations. This article presents data regarding fishermen's perceptions of MPAs, including demographic and fishermen profile. A stratified random sampling technique was utilized to select fishermen from eight states along the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Data were collected using a self-structured questionnaire through face-to-face interviews with 800 fishermen. Descriptive analysis, including frequencies and percentages, was employed to analyze the data. The findings offer valuable insights into views on the MPAs and the socio-economic profile of fishermen. Respondents agreed with most statements regarding the benefits and importance of establishing MPAs. The majority agreed that gazetting of MPAs was crucial for the sustainability of marine fisheries resources. This information will support the policymakers and researchers in enhancing the enforcement of marine protected areas to meet global targets.
